UCL East Marshgate

The skyline in and around the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park has undergone relentless change in the two decades since the Games were first awarded to London.

And while some of the more stark, skyward-thrusting towers have divided opinion, the likes of the curvaceous velodrome, adaptable stadium, bright new neighbourhood Chobham Manor and the dramatic landscaping of the Park itself have all scooped up assorted gongs over the years.

Now, as many of the most ambitious buildings within the QEOP have recently been completed and finally opened, they too are lining up, hoping to be similarly celebrated. But how do locals feel about them?

Historic architectural organisation, RIBA, just announced the shortlist for their London 2026 prize, and it includes no less than three nominations within the Park. These are the huge £250m UCL East Marshgate, (designed by Stanton Williams, main pic above), its gleaming neighbour, the halls of residence at UCL One Pool Street (by Lifschutz Davidson Sandilands) and just across the water, the angular mid-sized dance auditorium, rehearsal studios and public spaces of Sadler's Wells East (by O'Donnell + Tuomey), both pictured below.

Last year, the thoroughly scrubbed-up Tower Hamlets Town Hall scooped the top prize, with East Bank’s imposing UAL London College of Fashion on the shortlist too, but with a total of 72 contenders in the running for 2026, there’s stiff competition ahead of the award being announced later this year.

So, pre-empting their decision, we thought we’d throw it out there to The Wick readers to see which of the locally nominated buildings they’d be most happy to see awarded the prize.

Vote now, with a quick click or tap on one of the options below, and you’ll have a chance to leave a further comment (if you wish to) once you’ve voted. We’d love to hear opinions of all kinds. Results in next week’s edition…
