After a massive first weekend of truly barnstorming headliners and new-fave musical discoveries, All Points East festival returns to Victoria Park this Fri, Sat & Sun with more epic live performances in store.

Friday sees James Murphy's mighty LCD Soundsystem play their only London gig of the summer, with Jai Paul, Floating Points and many more, then it's annual electronic bash Field Day on Saturday, with the return of French legends Justice plus techno queen Charlotte De Whitte's full Overdrive show. Then Sunday things rock out with The Postal Service and Death Cab For Cutie headlining a mega line-up to close the weekend right.

🪴 East Village gallery Hypha Studios hosts the launch of Living with the Living tomorrow night, Thursday 22nd August. It’s a new show from Biodesign Collective, showcasing the integration of living systems into everyday objects. Working in collaboration with microbes such as algae, fungi, and bacteria, they challenge convention and invite visitors to embark on a journey into a parallel paradigm where our daily lives coexist with nurturing living systems and communities.

🐵 Who’s Holding Who Up is a new exhibition reminding us that we human are very much part of natural world too. Artist Michel Debono has been working in sculpture since 1964 to depict deforestation and the effect it causes to the animals that live there. Opening at Indra Gallery on September 7th, it’s a multi-sensory experience of sound, touch, vision and smell, through the deepest reaches of mankind’s self reflection.

🌏 Sugar House Island’s Hypha Gallery 2 is currently showing an evocative collection of installations, film, painting, photography, and mixed-media works by 20 emerging artists from the Royal College of Art at Ripples. The exhibition challenges conventional narratives around decoloniality, and how it can be analysed in contemporary times through both personal and communal lenses. Artist talks run this Friday 23rd, and 30th August, 7-8 pm.

MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE

HWK launches Chop Deli Bistro

🎉 It’s the start of weekly Aperitivo sessions at coffee-and-cocktails bar HWK with the grand opening this Friday 23rd August of Chop Deli Bistro - and some special offers. There’s a free charcuterie board with every two drinks purchased from 4pm-6pm and then 2-4-1 on classic cocktails until late as DJ Kay Gee drops breakbeats before things go underground acid into the night.

💃🏻 No.90 are getting things suitably hot for Carnival weekend with a Latin x Afrobeats clash this Friday, 23rd August that brings together the best of both worlds with the fusion of incredible party music genres in one unforgettable night. It begins with a salsa class (for all abilities) at 9pm, then expect a night of Salsa, Bachata, Reggaeton and Afrobeats through until the early hours.

😮‍💨 Orii Jam throw an extra-big unofficial carni afters on Monday 26th, busting out the usual multi-disciplinary fiesta of creativity for all those ravers who just can’t get enough dancing, who’ll decamp from the streets over West.

⚠️ Hackney Council are currently developing their evening and nighttime strategy; a consultation that will go on to shape and influence their future approach to pretty much everything that happens between 6pm and 6am. WORKSHOPS

Arbeit Studios and the Integrate agency are running a special free workshop at Trowbridge Gardens called Write Better Bids! Unlocking Funding Success for Grants and Tenders. It’s in association with Hackney Impact, a project that helps small businesses and organisations across the borough access the type of support they need. Integrate’s Eoin Heffernan will talk through top writing tips and fundraising bid strategies including win themes, the art of saying no, the pipeline development process and more, followed by networking. EDUCATION & TRAINING

🏢 Urban Frontiers is a pop-up exhibition from SHIFT and UCL exploring the new technologies and approaches to data that will shape the way we live, but are often invisible. These curated artefacts show how startups, researchers and communities are already building tomorrow's cities. It runs Fri 23rd and Tues 27th August at UCL East’s One Pool Street building.

🆕 SEEDED is a five-month part time residency programme for East London-based creative practitioners and thinkers to explore ideas relating to their socially-engaged practice. UAL, UCL East and other East Bank partners work closely with the selected individuals, who get £6k funding to support the residency. The focus will be social justice, inclusion and accessibility in the arts, the built and natural environment, or community engagement. Deadline for applications is Tuesday 17th September.

🪴The Olympic Park’s SHIFT innovation catalyst is seeking London-based SMEs working on solutions to the sustainability challenges facing our food systems to join the next Future Industries Demonstrator challenge. If you are successful, you’ll have the chance to rapidly scale your innovation with the opportunity of receiving up to £25,000 plus access to local co-working spaces and tailored support. Applications close on September 8th.

Hackney PRIDE365 grants available now

🏳️‍⚧️ Hackney Council’s Culture Team have announced two small award programmes open to Hackney’s LGBTQIA+ residents and/or for LGBTQIA+ cultural activities that take place in Hackney and and engage local communities. The awards of up to £2,000 are aimed at supporting events planned for either Transgender Awareness Week (13th-19th November), Transgender Day of Remembrance (20th Nov) or for LGBT+ History Month 2024 (in February 2025). Find out more about how to apply for the Hackney PRIDE365 cultural commissions. Application deadline is Sunday 1st September.

🎪 Sustainable Wallis Road business hub The Loop is participating in the Open House Festival 2024, throwing its doors wide to the general public to come inside and discover all the phenomenal circular economy businesses working there. Thursday 19th September, 5pm-9pm.

🫂 For nearly a decade, Wick Award has been creating opportunities for young people, building community connections and improving wellbeing for all in the area. Now they are planning to establish a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) to continue this vital work for the future. Everyone is invited to a meeting on Tuesday 24th September from 6.30pm-8pm at Gascoyne 2 Community Hall where you’ll have a chance to share your priorities for Wick Award's future initiatives, learn more about the CIO plans and connect with other locals and groups looking to address the community’s most pressing needs.
