This freshers welcome guide is for everyone ❤️
Plus The Bath House is saved, and masses to do in the neighbourhood for the next 7 days
A new intake of students are beginning to settle in to the area, and with thousands of copies of The Wick handed out at the recent freshers fairs, many of them will already have our pull-out 4-page guide to getting the most out of the area - without breaking the bank.
For those that didn’t get a copy, and indeed for everyone else keen to uncover more of Hackney Wick’s hidden hangouts, quirky venues, cheap eats and more, we’ve put the entire guide up online this week.
You can find the digital version online now (with print copies still available through our 200+ local distribution points, too).
THE WICK BOOK
![]() | 15 Years of Culture, Community & Change |
We’re getting increasingly excited as we continue to put together The Wick book, gathering some amazing archive material from the last decade and a half, for what promises to be a beautiful record of recent history.
For a taste of what’s to come, take a look at this feature from our relaunch edition, published exactly 5 years ago.
Urban commentator Jess Furseth gives an overview of the post-Olympic landscape back then, and you can see amazing before and after photos depicting some of the most dramatic areas of change…

ART & CULTURE
🖼️ The new show at Felstead Art at The Trampery is Palimpsest, a collection of mixed media collages by artist Anastasia Tribambuka, that act as a record of memory, presence, and absence. The private view is this Fri 10th Oct and it runs to 6th Dec, interweaving fragments of personal and collective stories and exploring the shifting patterns between us and the fragile traces that remain.
🌌 The latest free exhibition in the First Floor Galleries of UCL Mashgate is Space Tangle, featuring a series of works by artist, Dr Sarah Fortais, using outer space to change our perspective on waste and materials here on Earth. Among the pieces, Cosmic Debris is an installation of 280 cast hands arranged like a meteor shower, to spark discussion about managing space junk, while Cosmic Flock repurposes debris from East London into spacesuits for sheep. Open daily 3rd Oct – 2nd Nov.
🌑 Immersive shipping container-based theatrical experience, Darkfield, is popping up for a very limited run, until 2nd Nov. Innovators in 360-degree audio tech-meets-performance shows, Darkfield utilise striking sets, complete darkness, binaural sound and sensory effects to place each audience member at the centre of intense and evolving narratives. VIDEO OF THE WEEK
⚽ Nice mix of match highlights, commentary and fly-on-the-wall drama here from Hackney Wick FC as they take on Soul Tower Hamlets FC in the local derby. It’s a great insight into the club, the players and check the difference in the two dressing rooms after the match, with celebrations, commiserations and a tough team talk.
