Look at what's been achieved, and there's plenty more to come...

How Hackney Wick's unique model for working towards a sustainable creative economy took shape over a decade and a half

It was 15 years ago this month that a gathering of locals was first convened for the purpose of working together towards a permanent, sustainable creative economy in this part of East London.

The Hackney Wick and Fish Island Cultural Interest Group (CIG) has been meeting on the second Friday morning of the month ever since.

It’s a free open-access creative business innovation network, for anyone interested in ensuring that this unique community isn’t displaced by post-Olympics regeneration, as has been the story in so many other artistic urban clusters elsewhere.

Many hundreds of people have been to the meetings over the years, sometimes as regulars and sometimes for a one-off visit, but they have all contributed to the conversation, resulting in an ongoing series of genuinely innovative, incremental achievements.

By the end of 2010 the group were discussing the idea of setting up a local development trust. It ultimately took seven years, but the HWFI Community Development Trust (CDT) was finally incorporated in 2017 and is now trailblazing in its success, working in partnership with the development sector to ensure community ownership and affordable access to buildings in the area for generations to come.

The Wick - both as the print publication and this weekly newsletter - also emerged from connections and dialogue fostered at the CIG, as have countless other collaborations, projects and partnerships over a decade and a half.

Next month, CIG founder William Chamberlain has been invited to present what has become known as the ‘Hackney Wick Model’ of innovative creative placemaking and community-led regeneration at the Global Placemaking Summit in Toronto.

Join us this at this month’s meeting on Friday 9th May (details below - suitably being held at The Loop, the CDT’s acclaimed circular economy hub), to participate in the ongoing collaborative innovation.

CIG feedback over the years…

“Since its inception, the CIG has been the go-to forum for those wanting to meet residents, creatives, businesses, developers and politicians. As a local Hackney Wick politician it has put me in touch with the movers and shakers beyond the boundaries of my own ward in a way in which no other organisation has.” Cllr Chris Kennedy, LB Hackney

“An unwavering force within the local creative community.” Adriana Marques, former Head of Art & Culture, London Legacy Development Corporation

“The pivotal anchor of the Hackney Wick creative economy.” Juliet Can, Stour Trust

“The CIG has displayed a brilliant commitment to collaboration with Hackney residents, businesses and local stakeholders and Here East has benefited greatly from this partnership. We are lucky to have them as a neighbour.” Gavin Poole, CEO, Here East

“A long-established and trusted local network that could almost be the model for a 21st Century chamber of commerce. The CIG is not just capturing and learning from its experience confronting the impact of rapid urban development, in real time, but also in sharing that knowledge as widely as possible.” Clare Richards, Founder, The Footwork Trus”t

“A trusted vehicle for bringing people together.” Briony Fleming, UCL East

“Its diversity of voices and stakeholders across sectors, all working toward a common goal, is a good example of the value of local community networks coming together and forming productive partnerships.” Dr Claire McAndrew, Senior Research Fellow in Public Engagement, the Bartlett School of Architecture

“The CIG has galvanised local groups and artists, engaged intelligently with councils and developers and made the case for improvements. This model of local cultural entrepreneurship is vital if London is to remain a world capital for culture." Munira Mirza, former Deputy Mayor for London
