ART & CULTURE

Street Art Remixed at Two More Years

🥫 Street Art Remixed is the new show opening tonight (Wed 19th) at Two More Years, by Fish Island photographer Carl Franklin. His work features an offbeat look at the local street art scene, focusing his camera on the soon-to-be-demolished wall by the Bottom Lock of the Hertford Union Canal, while also capturing the colourful cast of characters who pass by the artworks every day.

🖼️ This Friday 21st June there’s a timely art and media exhibition on justice, unity, diversity and cohesion in Iran being held at Indra Gallery. Our Story is One is a free exhibition that’s open to the public all day, but you must have a ticket (also free) if you want to attend the evening programme, where the UK Bahá’i Office of Public Affairs will present music, poetry and more.

⬆️ Indra Gallery is also the place to find Belters next Tuesday (25th) - a one night only exhibition celebrating fresh fashion talent from the North of England. The collective of artists explores heritage, community and their relationships with their hometowns, and how northern roots shape perspectives on fashion. Apparently, you can expect to have ‘the most northern night of your life’.

WORKSHOPS

🖌️ Professional artist John Gosnell leads a weekly life drawing class on Monday evenings at Artsect Gallery that’s open to all levels, from absolute beginners to advanced artists. He’s on hand to offer expert advice to help you create your art, with different models each week and the bar open throughout to oil the wheels of a very social as well as creative evening.

🌿 Local school teacher Sharon Owen is a strong believer in the benefits of spending more time in natural surroundings, so she’s set up We Are Nature, a offering donation-based ‘stay and play’ Forest School for under 5’s and their carers, as well as Forest Bathing sessions for grown-ups. You’ll find her in Wick Woods on Tuesdays and selected Saturdays all summer.

⚫ Head to Slice Club this Monday, 24th June, for a night of ‘backgammon for the wicked’, HackGammon, where beginners can learn how to play, and the more experienced can try out the HackGammon cards or even 4-player Quadragammon. It’s open to all ages, you can bring your own board or borrow one on the night and, of course, there’s plentiful pizza and drinks on hand to fuel your gaming.

The waterside terrace at Two More Years

🎶 Catch DJs Rupert Tellis playing back to back with resident Emile at Two More Years’ deep house and minimal night DIY* Deep Inside You this Friday, 21st June. It’s free to get in all night, and the DJs are strictly playing vinyl, too.

🤣 It's the debut of promising new local stand-up showcase Fabwick Comedy Club a week today, on Wednesday 26th June at - you guessed it - the brand new Fabwick venue and restaurant on Queen's Yard. Edinburgh-bothering comedian Phil Green headlines alongside three more top draw talents.

🎛️ World renowned vinyl purveyors Phonica Records return to the dancefloor at Number 90 this Saturday night, 22nd June, for a free party where their expert selectors will drop solid house grooves unitl the early hours.

🥣 Omega Hub is the spot for a rejuvenating lunchtime sound bath this Friday 21st June, under the spell of the gong and Tibetan singing bowls and ocean drums. The group will also receive crystal Reiki healing using a sacred geometry grid, and the session will conclude with a brief individual 5D energy healing/Angelic Reiki healing, including aura cleanse with a 528 Hz tuning fork used for DNA repair.

🙏 Community meditation sessions at Akasa are held every Tuesday to Thursday at 7am, to get your day of to a really positive start. There’s complimentary tea and seasoned practitioners on hand to help guide you.

EDUCATION & TRAINING

🤯 Innovation incubator SHiFT are running an afternoon of dynamic conversations and networking at Loughborough University London, on July 11th titled Scaling Innovation, to address the complex urban challenges of our time. You’ll join business leaders, SMEs, academic experts, community innovators and public sector representatives to collaboratively explore how we can propel early-stage innovations to new heights in London and beyond.

👚 Newham-based fashion and creative arts charity Caramel Rock is offering an after school programme with Rights and Equalities Newham (REIN) that includes hands-on workshops and opportunities for young minds to discover their creative expression. Reach out to them for more info. They are also partnering with Hackney Learning Trust to introduce a new year-long project for young people and adults to gain BTEC qualifications in in fashion and digital media skills. NEW OPENINGS

🌮 Howling Hops Tank Bar has Latin fusion kitchen La Cumbia in residence for the whole of the summer, and to celebrate they are launching an inaugural Taco Tuesday, starting next Tuesday, 25th June. It’s an all-day menu deal where you get 5 tacos for £15 from a variety of tacos from the regular menu plus rotating specials.

🍹 Waterfront pizzeria and art gallery Unlock are hosting Aperitivo Club, in collaboration with the Italian Wine Shop next Thursday, 27th June. You will be able to taste 5 different wines all hailing from small Italian wineries, alongside 5 delicious small plates created by chef Emanuele.

💃 Studio Wayne McGregor is looking for a brilliant and motivated Archivist, to manage and oversee our dynamic archive with over 30 years’ worth of materials. The right candidate will make a significant contribution to the Studio’s history and current activity, raising the profile of McGregor’s work as well as acquiring and disseminating materials to appropriate stakeholders internally and externally.
