Come Together at The Great Get Together

Saturday June 15th sees the Olympic Park’s big free community event, The Great Get Together, return from midday to 7pm.

This year sees a large programme of activities from the incoming cultural organisations of East Bank, including creative arts and crafts workshops from the V&A, cyanotype printmaking with UCL, upcycling fashion with UAL London College of Fashion and Sadler’s Wells / Breakin’ Convention takeovers of the Riverside East stage.

The main stage boasts loads more impressive Sadler’s Wells dance shows and BBC Introducing artists Aman Sangha and Jernade Miah, plus you can encounter all kinds of activates from roller skating to samba.

ART & CULTURE

Community Lunch portrait exhibition

📸 A free exhibition of portraits celebrating the faces of the Gascoyne Tenants and Residents Association ongoing Community Lunches has just gone on display at the Gascoyne One Hall. It was unveiled over last weekend’s Well Street Common Festival, and features the work of Hackney Wick photographer Brian Whar, showcasing the lovely folk who attend the regular lunches, a project supported by Wick Award.

🌉 Have you taken a wander down to see artist Helen Cammock’s brand new installation, On WindTides which now spans the River Lea near Cody Dock? It’s the latest piece of public art to join The Line, the free art trail that leads all the way up from North Greenwich into the Olympic Park. Also worth a visit is the exhibition to coincide with the unveiling, Swirling Eddies, Tender Breeze, which showcases the work of local community groups in conversation with the artist. WORKSHOPS

Riverside East

🎮 Games enthusiasts can sign up for a day of fun and valuable insights as Staffordshire University London present Games in the City II, on Saturday 22nd of June. Prepare to dive into the intricacies of crafting playable games, beginning from character modding and texturing to animation and mechanics programming in our captivating workshops. Whether your passion lies in games art, animation, or programming, they promise something for everyone. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to listen and ask questions to industry experts on ‘Trends in Games Design and Development’.

🆓 All local artists, makers and creatives are invited to attend the free series of business support workshops at Trowbridge Gardens every Tuesday, running until 2nd July. Hackney Impact have put together sessions on sales, networking, defining customers and more to help you make a living from your art.

🍷 The new Riverside East dining hub in the Park is hosting the latest event in the popular Wine and Wean baby-friendly cheese and wine tastings, tomorrow at midday. Little ‘un aren’t just welcome, they are compulsory, as is enjoying some great wines with other parents.

MUSIC & NIGHTLIFE

Free Aperol Spritz at The Lord Napier

🍹 The Lord Napier pub crew are planning to manifest warmer weather by throwing a lively Aperol Summer Party next Wednesday June 19th, complete with 100 FREE Aperol Spritzes for early arrivals. The sunshine funtimes begin at 5pm, so you know what time to head over, and you’ll also find their party DJs playing in the main bar all night long. #WickWednesday

🎤 Sunday afternoon (June 16th) sees the return of Full Joy Jam at Akasa. It’s a heart-centred sober jam with an open mic where you can share courageous expression of any kind, from music to poetry to storytelling, plus there’s vegan food and a chillout space with a chance to get creative with arts and craft supplies.

🔊 Head to Colour Factory tonight for the latest edition of the residency by Live From Earth's MCR-T, who has invited Detroit ghettotech innovator DJ Assault and hoe__mies founder Meg10 down to kick off a night of sure-fire booty poppin’ madness.

😎 Social Beats is back on the HWK terrace this Saturday (15th) with an epic daytime/evening summer party to herald a new season of parties. Pioneering Balearic DJ and acid house hero, Nancy Noise will headline alongside residents, Hey Burt, Jay Bacall, KONNR, Ritchie Haydn and a further special guest, the rising talent, Selin Asar.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

🏃 East End Road Runners welcome allcomers to their 5km race around the Olympic Park this Tuesday night, 18th June, with the race starting at 7.30pm. It’s fast, affordable and you’ll be up against other runners in the local Elvis League series. Registration closes 16th.

💪 Lee Valley VeloPark has just opened a brand £500k new state-of-the-art gym, featuring the latest TechnoGym machines, Pure Strength resistance equipment, free weights and a wide range of classes, from group cycling to Pilates and Zumba. Sign up this month (before 30th June) and you can take advantage of their Early Bird Offer, which means no joining fee, and membership at just £44 for adults and £28 for juniors.

🕺Increase your heart rate and learn a new skill at the beginners hip hop and breakdancing classes held by Révérence Dance Company on Saturday mornings at The Cave. It’s an open class for anyone who is curious to challenge themselves through dance or for the more advanced dancers just looking to have a good time.

NEW OPENINGS

Silo at Crate Brewery / The White Building

🏭 Zero waste restaurant Silo is planning to open a new fermentation factory to mark it’s 10th anniversary, and there’s a crowdfunder now open for those that want to play a part in making it happen. They will predominantly be making a unique flavoursome fresh product called koji, plus miso from spent beer grains and ‘Zero Soy Sauce’ from waste bread. They’ve already got half way to their target, so do check out the attractive things on offer to those who dig deep.

♻️ If your work has circular economy principles at its heart, then you may well consider basing your operations alongside like-minded others at The Loop on Wallis Rd. The final three units at this physical micro demonstrator hub for the local circular economy are being offered by studio operator Arbeit. There are two 145 sq ft units and a bigger 575 sq ft unit - more details here.

🗿 Pangaea Sculptor's Centre are hiring a new Development Director to help them launch their exciting new home of sculpture in East London. They are also keen to fill some Non-Exec Director positions to support in business development, commercial and fundraising strategy.

🎭 The Yard Theatre is looking for an Operations Director who will play a key role in taking the organisation to the next level by managing the current programmes while working on the delivery of a £6m capital project to refurbish and extend the theatre, bar and studio spaces. Deadline for applications 21st June. They are also hiring for a part-time Associate Sound Designer to work on an exciting upcoming production happening in the Autumn. Deadline 24th June. 💃 Studio Wayne McGregor is looking for a brilliant and motivated Archivist, to manage and oversee our dynamic archive with over 30 years’ worth of materials. The right candidate will make a significant contribution to the Studio’s history and current activity, raising the profile of McGregor’s work as well as acquiring and disseminating materials to appropriate stakeholders internally and externally. Deadline to apply June 26th.
